Two Neighborhoods Wait

In West Baltimore, the city built a new neighborhood, Heritage Crossing. It was designed as a mixed-income, suburban-style development that replaced a high-rise public housing project. Heritage Crossing borders blocks of the historic Upton neighborhood that are now abandoned. Though the two neighborhoods share a geographic space, they don’t share a community.

Urban Affairs Reporting Class

The Baltimore Urban Affairs Reporting class of the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism spent a semester exploring two West Baltimore neighborhoods: Upton and Heritage Crossing. The class is supported by the Abell Foundation. The Baltimore Sun provided class space and library research materials.
